Today was the first time I heard about a Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage. So of course I had to sign up for one. The ancient master healers of Hawaii practiced massage regularly and combined it with the laws of Huna, a healing empowerment and spiritual shamanism, thought to be about 35,000 years old.
That description got me intrigued. As I read on I became even more curious.
“Lomi Lomi opens the channels of the body allowing for the freedom of flowing Mana. Hula movements may be combined with breath techniques by the practitioner which assists the Mana flow for all involved. Lomi Lomi can be slow and very relaxing or it may be a little faster and invigorating. No two massages are exactly the same.”
So I am envisioning my massage therapist doing a hula dance as she is working on me and invoking the shaman spirits by breathing heavily to get my Mana flow going. Or is this getting her Mana flow going? I’m confused.
I continue to imagine the shaman spirits responding to her call, and thus her hula dance moves into high gear. Lots of Mana flowing now. Why don’t I just go to a hula show? It would be cheaper. Just what kind of massage is this going to be?
Well, the answer is, a very relaxing one. Here’s how it actually went down.
The massage office is on the second floor of the building right on the beach. The massage table is super comfortable. A large picture window is wide open and I feel the trade winds blow gently over my body. I hear the pounding of the surf as the waves break onto the beach. Feeling so relaxed I no longer care if she does the hula or a rendition of Michael Jackson’s moonwalking.
She explained that I would be the one doing the deep breathing, upon her cues, to promote deeper relaxation. And no, she would not be doing any dancing. This was both a relief and a disappointment. But given that she was a size Triple XL, I think it worked out for the best.
